   A Note on Paper, Pounds, and Points 

Paper is described in points or pounds. A point is a thousandth of an inch and is used to describe thicker papers and boards. Paperback covers, folders, cardstock, and business cards are all described in point. A pound describes text papers, vellum, and certain cover weight as well. This term means the weight of a ream of paper from which five hundred full size sheets are cut.
